In vertebrate anatomy the brainstem (or brain stem) is the posterior part of the brain, adjoining and structurally continuous with the spinal cord. The brain stem provides the main motor and sensory innervation to the face and neck via the cranial nerves. Though small, this is an extremely important part of the brain as the nerve connections of the motor and sensory systems from the main part of the brain to the rest of the body pass through the brain stem. This includes the corticospinal tract (motor), the posterior column-medial lemniscus pathway (fine touch, vibration sensation and proprioception) and the spinothalamic tract (pain, temperature, itch and crude touch). The brain stem also plays an important role in the regulation of cardiac and respiratory function. It also regulates the central nervous system, and is pivotal in maintaining consciousness and regulating the sleep cycle.

It is usually described as including the medulla oblongata (myelencephalon), pons (part of metencephalon), and midbrain (mesencephalon). Less frequently, parts of the diencephalon are included.

Where can I get stem cell treatment for brain damaged baby?
Q. Hi - I don't know if you can help me but am based in Dublin, Ireland. I recently gave birth to a baby girl and want to know where I can get stem cell treatment for her asap - as she has been diagnosed with perm brain damage and will most likely suffer from spastic quadriplegia if she survives..the only thing she has is a brain stem with heart and just about breathing function..I really want to save her and believe that stem cells may give her that quality of life..that she so deserves..any advice info where to go who to talk to and how much would be gladly appreciated..thanks.. Perhaps it can restore some of the function loss then?? she can not suck, swallow or gag for instance..so perhaps some light cell treatment might make her life a… [cont.]

A. If that is all your daughter has, unfortuantely, I don't believe that stem cell therapy will help. It cannot grow a brain when one has been destroyed; it simply helps in SOME illnesses to replace function lost in a SMALL area. I wish I had better news. My sympathies.

Why are brain stem dead organ donors anesthetized prior to removal? ?
Q. I have heard its because the body's blood pressure goes off the chart and heart rate increases similar to if the person was experiencing consciousness - is there something we are not being told? That even brain stem dead patients can feel pain on some level - is that why they are anesthetized? Any answers from the medical fraternity are welcome!

A. Check this abstract from a paper on the subject- "For more than twenty years, so-called brain death in the United Kingdom has been a misnomer. Now it is recognized that this condition should be called brain stem death because it is only the brain stem that is tested. Such tests are incomplete and do not determine the absence of all activity in the brain stem. It is agreed that they do not exclude activity in the higher parts of the brain. Patients certified to be brain stem dead are still responsive, whether by spinal reflexes only or not, and there is no agreement on the need for anesthesia. Very little of this controversial situation is public knowledge, and consent may be poorly informed. There is a serious shortage of organs for… [cont.]

Dad just had surgery to remove cancer from brain stem?
Q. He came out of surgery and still has not gotten feeling in his left side. The right side came back pretty quickly even before he came out of recovery. The surgery was this morning and was over right around noon. Is now after 7:30 is he ever going to regain left side?

A. This must be very hard for you. My heart felt prayers for you and your family. I think it may be too soon to tell when he will regain feeling. I don't know the answer to your question but my gut response is that feeling on and use of the left side may take a while to come back. I am an acupuncturist who works with stroke/Parkinson's patients who have had brain consequences from those kinds of injury. Sometimes after a stroke, function and / or sensation of the affected areas comes back very quickly. But if it does not come back quickly, there is considered to be a two year window of time during which scalp acupuncture may help restore sensation and movement. So if all that your dad wants to come back does not come back promptly, talk to… [cont.]
