Stress is a term in psychology and biology, first coined in the 1930s, which has in more recent decades become a commonplace of popular parlance. It refers to the consequence of the failure of an organismhuman or animal – to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats, whether actual or imagined.

How come medicine hasn't found a measurable scale for the effects of stress on the heart and rest of the body?
Q. I really think stress is worse than cholesteral ever thought about being.
Asked by Pale Rider - Wed Jan 17 15:11:36 2007 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. There are hormones that are increased during stress that are measurable, such as cortisol. The hormone is very important for the body to handle acute stress. Medicine has plenty of ways to measure all these and that's not the main problem today. The problem is that people depend on pills so much and they forget how to stay healthy by natural ways- exercise, healthy mentality, good rest and proper diet.

A. Over The Counter sleeping pills do the trick for me, as I too suffer from stress and can't sleep. Walgreens sells a over the counter pill called "sleep aid" you take 2 and it works like a charm, just make sure you have about 8 or 9 hours to devote to sleep!! Wal-Mart also sells a pill by the same name, give it a try!

Is stress the cause of acnes? Can you suggest a remedy for them?
Q. So is it actually stress? But even then everyone is stressed and not everyone has acnes, right? Please suggest some home-made remedies which are not too expensive and easy to follow as well. Please also give names of some medicines with least amount of side-effects. While giving the brand names of medicines available in the market where you live, please also give their generic names; as brand names could differ from country to country. Thanks. I am in India.

A. There are many products sold for the treatment of acne, many of them without any scientifically-proven effects. Generally speaking successful treatments give little improvement within the first week or two; and then the acne decreases over approximately 3 months, after which the improvement starts to flatten out. Many treatments that promise big improvements within 2 weeks are likely to be largely disappointing. However short bursts of cortisone can give very quick results, and other treatments can rapidly improve some active spots, but not usually all active spots. Widely available OTC bactericidal products containing benzoyl peroxide may be used in mild to moderate acne. The gel or cream containing benzoyl peroxide is rubbed, twice… [cont.]
